The year is 1140 and England is torn by the strife of civil war. Oliver Pascal chances upon a village raided by mercenaries and rescues the survivors: an orphaned boy, who is the illegitimate son of the old king, and his mother's maid, a young widow named Catrin. After escorting them to Bristol Castle, they are accepted into the household of Robert of Gloucester and while Catrin finds herself falling in love with Oliver she suffers a deep boredom at the frivolity of court life. Thus when the old midwife Etheldreda offers to teach her the secrets of her ancient art, Catrin agrees. The Road to Heaven: Val Brelinski's The Girl Who Slept with God - Everyday ebook

Raise your hand if you've ever thought that no family could possibly be stranger than yours. If asked the same question, Jory Quanbeck, the heroine of Val Brelinski's sparkling debut novel, The Girl Who Slept with God , would undoubtedly raise both hands. Growing up in the small town of Acro, Idaho, she and her family are members of an ultra-conservative evangelical Christian church, where acting, thinking, and feeling 100 percent godly 100 percent of the time is dictate. Jory's just turned fourteen as the novel opens, which sets her up, emotionally and physically, to resist the harsh demands of her family and her church. Plus, it's 1970, and the social rule, even in Acro, seems to be that there are no rules. All of these factors are key ingredients for a classic coming-of-age novel, but what makes Brelinski's work unforgettably original and page-turning is the complexity of Jory's moral dilemmas. Our focus remains primarily on her - through her winning first-person voice that's part Margaret Simon, part Holden Caulfield - and on her older sister, Grace, who for most of her seventeen years has been the quintessential golden child. Grace follows the rules of the church, ardently enforced by their astrologist-father Oren, to a perfectly perpendicular T, and at the beginning of the novel goes off on a missionary trip to Mexico. It's not too long, though, before Jory and the third, youngest sister, Frances, are rejoined by Grace. Taking the idea of a second virgin birth too far, Grace becomes a pariah, and not wanting to soil his reputation, Oren sends her and Jory - whose minor behavioral infringements have also not been to his liking - off to live on their own, in the... Jory's already tumultuous entry into puberty is heightened by these changes, including going to a new public high school where the kids wear fringed moccasins and bellbottoms instead of the Mary Janes and mid-knee-length skirts she's used to. At... The boundaries of their relationship are unclear, and when he takes Jory and Grace to a hippie house on Halloween shady details of his life emerge in psychedelic colors. Grip's betrayal of Jory's trust at the end of the book provides more than a loss-of-innocence moment for the misfit teen, who longs more than anything for someone to understand her as a flawed, but good, girl. it also upends the world of all the Quanbecks, and brings the novel to a shocking, principle-shifting conclusion. As Jory's understanding of her world and herself expand throughout the novel, so too does Brelinski invite us to open our minds to how this sectarian setting is not so different from our own times. Jory and her family may call the reason for their suffering "sin," but whether our lives are shaped by fate or free will is the fundamental question that this provocative novel poses. And by the end, even Oren realizes that our place as mere stars in the awesome and awful universe is anything but fixed, no matter how many times we've traced our orbits. Excerpt: The Girl Who Slept with God by Val Brelinski. On the last day of August in 1970, and a month shy of her fourteenth birthday, Jory’s father drove his two daughters out to an abandoned house and left them there. He drove past the railroad tracks and the fish hatchery and the rodeo grounds, past the sugar beet factory and the slaughterhouse and the meatpacking plant. all the while Jory stared out the window in a silent fury. She lay slumped over with her head resting accidentally on Jory’s shoulder, her drool dampening the upper portion of Jory’s T-shirt. Jory gave her sister a shove and then turned toward the window. Black Cat Lane and Chicken Dinner Road and Floating Feather rolled past—long, twisty lanes sided with fields of sugar beets and alfalfa and corn. Jory watched a lone mallard drop and skid like a bomber onto an irrigation ditch while three goats perched king of the hill–style on a salvaged roof a farmer had put out for them. Her father continued on past several vast silagey-smelling feedlots, and then the fields grew even larger and the scenery more sparse and the houses less frequent, and finally he.
