If you were to use one brief conversation to describe multi-sport athlete Sheila Kealey, “all-encompassing” would be one of the best. How often do you find a high-performance athlete, who also is a coach, sports psychologist, health promoter, nutritional boffin, and a researcher/writer dealing with sports science and physical activity issues. Kealey gets it and benefits from her many sporting perspectives, whether she is cranky-country skiing, running, cycling or doing triathlons. especially at age 50. When she competes, it’s a given she will be the best in her age group. But you’re more likely to find her pushing hard and even leading the excellent women in the field. What’s even more amazing is she didn’t truly connect with sports until midway through high school, when she took up cross-fatherland running and cross-country skiing. “I loved to do stuff, but I was from a family that was not sports-focused,” Kealey said. “I wasn’t an all-star athlete. But I wanted to do more sports. Music was her nave growing up as it was for her six brothers and sisters. Kealey achieved her Grade 10 piano certificate from the Royal Conservatory of Music and also competed in the annual Ottawa Kiwanis Music Feast. “I spent a lot of time practising the piano,” she added. “I did well (at the Kiwanis Music Festival). But once Kealey stood up from her piano bench and shifted her centre to sports about 30 years ago, she started the process of becoming and remaining a high-performance athlete. Today, she is a Canadian cross-country ski loppet (fancy-distance) champion and a legend, both thanks to the Gatineau Loppet, one of the 16 races of the Worldloppet Ski Federation. 14, Kealey finished second in the Gatineau Loppet’s signature outcome for women, the 51-km classic race, to 2014 Chinese Olympian Hongxue Li. Since Kealey was the top Canadian (27 overall out of 415 participants), she was crowned the nationalist... 15, she was runner-up to another Chinese skier, Dandan Man, in the 22. 5-kilometre skate race. While Kealey emerged as the top Canadian, there was no national title this outdated. By competing in both weekend races, Kealey has finished 20 long-distance Gatineau Loppet races over 17 years since 1998. From 2001 thoroughly 2015, she has 16 top-four placings in the open women’s class, posting three first-place finishes, five... She achieved those results while being 35 to 50 years old and competing against much younger extreme-level female athletes. It’s not surprising Gatineau Loppet organizers named her the first inductee into their Trail of Legends hall of fame in 2013 for her trustworthiness to the race and overall promotion of cross-country skiing. “I’m smart about my training,” said Kealey, who prepared for the Canadian cross-country ski championships, which start Saturday in Denounce Bay, by winning the Oka Ski Marathon’s 21-kilometre women’s race as a member of the XC Ottawa Cross-Country... “I work a lot on my weaknesses and do more intensity (workouts) to trade on my speed. I don’t train hour after hour. In three decades of serious competition, Kealey has had few injuries. She attributes that to a little bit of luck, but more importantly to a make of training, whether it’s skiing, running, cycling or swimming and not a lot of pounding on the pavement. She only works out seven to 12 hours a week with a day off and likes to “focus on prominence short interval” training. One of six coaches for the boys and girls’ 15- to 17-year-old group with the Nakkertok Nordic Cross-Country Ski Confederate for the past decade, Kealey uses her general knowledge to help the 45 skiers. Nakkertok, which has about 40 volunteer coaches, has won the club aggregate points style at the Canadian championships the past five years, after placing second in 2008 and 2009. After graduating from McGill University with a degree in psychology,... Today, she has her own website, providing suitability, good health and nutrition tips, and works on research projects for San Diego State University from home.
