(AN EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK)

1960’s THE PIZZA DECADE

The Scenario: Hippies and flower children remain scattered throughout the city as this decade nears its end.
I remember the funny clothing, especially the flower print dresses women wore. Also you had that and ugly 60’s furniture which is now in style again. Some of it is even restored and selling for big bucks in antique shops. You know the bright red, and whatever other colors the leather sofas where back then.
As I walked down the streets of Brooklyn as a kid I’d hear the newest top 40 Motown songs fill the air, along with other new songs like: the Doors, “Hello I Love You”.
Speaking of music, a couple years later Led Zeppelin's Immigrant Song rang out its weird and kind of scary song intro, like a jungle call to all rockers. It was like an alarm clock going off every hour on the hour, on all New York AM radio stations that played top 40 hits.
Besides Classical music, the most popular genres of music by the end of the 60’s were only a few: Motown, Classic Rock, The British Invasion, Folk, Singers and Standards, and an occasional Instrumental song mixed in. Did I miss one? No, there wasn’t Hip-Hop or Alternative Rock yet. Things were simple then.
The smell of freshly baked bread, tomato sauce, cheese, and oregano scented the air in front of each pizzeria, making you feel that everything was perfect. And how could it not be? All you had to do was take a walk down the street and this smell was your personal tour guide leading you to the pizza ovens. You had instant access, to all ...

The Arizona Make haste: Part 1

Most recent summer we decided to move back to Tucson, partly because of the weather here in Nebraska: most convincing was the Mother’s Day tornado that devastated several towns and rural homes having missed our sporting house by just a quarter of a mile. Along with the weather came the realization that our property is just too much for us to manage anymore. A 5,000 sq. ft. house on 3 acres with lawn to mow and gardens to maintain is but-consuming hard work reminding us that with abundance comes responsibility. After 3 huge garage sales last Fall, we put the house on the market. Now it’s sold and we busy in 2 weeks. Making a household move is a daunting task, but we've made good progress, so much so that now I feel I can take a break from packing and update my blog. It’s a unaccustomed feeling emptying the shelves of books and then trying to decide the handful I should keep out to get me through 6 months at our rental home in Tucson.

Cooking Up a Disorder
Cooking Up a Disorder
I partiality to plan/cook for a dinner party. We had 6 good friends over for our traditional New Year's Cioppino meal. The Menu: Appetizers: Parmesan Crisps with Goat Cheese; Gruyere Gougeres Cioppino with Red Wine (featuring lots of untested Dungeness crab, mussels, clams and shrimp) Baby lettuce salad with blue cheese, dried cranberries and a balsamic vinagrette Today's sourdough bread Pasta (to soak up the soupy cioppino broth) Molten chocolate cakes with raspberries, dusted with powdered sugar Wine, wine and more wine Irish coffee (the famous San Francisco Buena Vista cafe prescription) and of course..... champagne at midnight (yes us old folks actually managed to stay up until midnite....) Sounds like a simple menu but I was in the cookhouse most of the day. The open bottle of Tractor Shed Red wine was used in the Cioppino. I considered sipping some while cooking, but decided against it - don't worry I more than made up for it later ! Faith your New Year is filled with good friends, fun and...
